The inspirational spark for ATProto was an open call by Jack Dorsey, still during his tenure as Twitter CEO, to build a more decentralised version of a social netwrok. A nebolous group formed around the task, internet-style, and the ATProto was born. Eventually, Bluesky was developed as a reference implementation built on the protocol.
